BSN Program Outcome 3- Effectively use nursing informatics & communication systems to support safe nursing practice in diverse healthcare settings.
Information systems are an incredible resource available to nurses, but are often times under utilized. Many of my courses have required me to perform assessments of patients as well as communities, and given me the tools to do so. Last semester was a huge eye opener on this front when I took nursing informatics. I was able to learn new tools and techniques for utilizing the information systems in my practice, and gain insight into a whole different world of nursing.
I was able to achieve this outcome by taking what I learned in nursing informatics and applying it in my clinical practice. The information I learned gave me the motivation to seek out learning opportunities to better my understanding of the computer systems I use in the clinical environment. For the most part nurses in my specialty rely heavily on paper charts for information, and normally do not wonder outside their areas of comfort to seek information. I have learned how to navigate the information systems available to me, and can now gather all the information I need in a matter of minutes. Many different assignments helped me in achieving this objective, but the most beneficial were research assignments in nursing informatics, such as the annotated bibliography about nursing informatics last semester. Through this research I gained new insights into nursing informatics, gained and appreciation for the usefulness of informatics systems, and learned more about the nurses that are furthering the informatics field as developments are made.
I plan to continue learning the information systems available to me and hope to start using new and improved information systems shortly at work. The biggest thing that will aid me going forward in practice is the knowledge and insight of the uses and importance of nursing informatics systems.
