BSN Program Outcome 6- Manage the direct & indirect care of individuals, families, groups, communities, & populations to promote, maintain, & restore health.
Every course from community health to transcultural nursing has offered education on this objective. Community nursing was a great class that educated me on the big picture of caring for communities and populations of people. There have been several assignments that aided me in achieving this outcome . One of the biggest came during the community health course where we had to do a community assessment, and in particular was the community assessment assignment. This assignment required gathering data about the community I live in, which was a great assignment that improved my research skills, and opened my eyes to some real issues in the community.
I achieved this outcome through the assessment and development of a care plan for a subpopulation of nurses in my community. I had to identify needs of the community as a whole, then of groups within the community, and finally of each individual person. A plan was developed to effect change at each level, interventions were implemented and then evaluated, and then changes were made as necessary to improve the outcomes. This process gave me a greater appreciation for how populations, communities, and individuals are connected.
Applying the mindset and research skills learned from this objective will allow me to better care for all my future patients. I have already begun applying some of these principals in my clinical practice. So far the most beneficial aspect has been the mindset of looking at the big picture and the understanding of how individuals and communities are interconnected.
