BSN Program Outcome 1 - Incorporate leadership & accountability in the delivery of safe, quality care in diverse health settings.
Incorporating leadership and accountability in the delivery of care has been a common theme throughout the BSN program. The difficult part is changing one's mindset towards one of leadership, rather then remaining the follower, and keeping yourself accountable for your decisions. It is easier to remain a follower and simply do what you are told to avoid taking accountability for your decisions. The BSN program has helped tailor my thinking towards that mindset, and with more time as well as effort I hope to continue on this path.
During the first semester I was asked to do best practice/quality improvement assignment in my work place. This required effort on my part because I had to find a project that dealt with quality improvement, research my facilities current practices, and then find ways to improve these practices. This was a great introduction to leadership because it required me to lead the way, determine quality standards, develop educational material, and find ways to implement my educational interventions. The basis of my assignment was to improve our policy and protocol for Foley catheter insertion, and care guidelines following insertion. Through research I determined that our practices were not up to par with current practice and needed to be changed. The project ended with many nurses being re-educated in pre insertion prep, foley insertion, and foley care after insertion. This project focused on leadership, taking accountability for my own practices, delivering safer care, and improving the quality of care given to patients.
This quality improvement assignment was only one of the projects that aided me in fulfilling the requirements for this outcome. The other big assignments were the community assessment, writing the Fadamin paper, and now the capstone assignment for this course. Each of which have enhanced my abilities and altered my mindset towards leadership and accountability.
I plan to continue learning about leadership and continue to develop the skills I am learning in the BSN program by actively seeking educational opportunities every chance I get.
