BSN Program Outcome 7- Demonstrate professional standards of moral, ethical, & legal conduct in the care of persons, families, groups, communities, and populations.
Transcultural nursing during my first semester in the BSN program has had the greatest impact on this objective's development. During this course I was required to read a book that dealt with cultural differences, ethical and moral conflicts, and legal ramifications revolving around the care of a child. After reading the book I was then required to write a paper on the material learned from the book. Writing this paper took some serous thought and review of the book in question, which sparked some intense self reflection, and a shift in how I practiced nursing. I gained an appreciation for cultural differences and my obligation as a nurse to provide morally and ethically acceptable care for all patients. I also gained some experience and knowledge of the legal aspects revolving around the care of children.
After gaining new insight into my own personal biases and feelings towards moral and ethical boundaries, I began to regularly reflect on patient encounters, and find ways of improving the overall process of my interactions with each patient. I also became more educated on legal issues concerning nursing care and advocating for patients. Although I still have a long ways to go I believe I have improved my own practice and my ability to act in a morally and ethically acceptable manner.
Each day I care for patients with diverse backgrounds that have many unique needs. The key is to find ways of caring for these patients in a way that provides morally, and ethically complete care. I plan to continue honing the skills I have learned in the BSN program to enhance my ability to provide this type of care. Some of the most important aspects of what I have learned are the personal reflection skills and a desire to be better.
