BSN Program Outcome
4- Develop a basic knowledge of policy, finance, & trends in regulatory
environments in relation to healthcare.
It would seem that most of what nurses are able to do, not do, and how they do them are controlled by policy. Policy it seems is often related to efforts to increase quality and safety of care. Quality and safety of care are important because that is what drives revenue and determines the reimbursement for the healthcare company. So obviously understanding policy is important in the clinical environment.
Achieving this outcome has been a work in progress and the biggest influence has been last semester in our policy class. Previously I was not to concerned with policy, financing, and the regulatory entities that control what policies are implemented. After taking this class I became more motivated to investigate policies, due in part because of the assignments required, but it has kept going because I realized the importance of the matter. Now I regularly look up policy to ensure I am following the best practice. If I have questions about policies I research why they are in place and what their rational really is. Some times it is found to be best practice, and a few times they are outdated. During the nursing policy class I was asked to research the affordable care act which taught me two things, one I was unfamiliar with the affordable care act, and two I was unfamiliar with ways of researching national policy. This assignment however brief was a great help with furthering my understanding of policy and of researching policy. This class was a base for which I have began to build my knowledge base which has aided me in this final semester as I prepared my capstone project. In the preparation for my capstone I performed a literature review of research that dealt with policies and best practice related to pre-operative prep solutions. This review is just one of the ways I have made progress towards fulfilling this outcome of the BSN program.
I plan to apply this outcome more as I go through my career, starting with becoming more involved with policies, and becoming knowledgeable enough to contribute toward policy development. Nursing associations are an important part of policy making and have the potential to effect some major changes in the nursing world. Because of this I have already joined an association for operating room nurses to keep myself more involved and informed.
