Introduction
My Name is Barlow Bird. I am a new nurse with just over a year of experience. I graduated from the ADN program at Dixie State University in May of 2014, and currently pending graduation from the BSN program at DSU in August of 2015. Deciding on what career path to take was never an easy decision. I spent a few years taking college prerequisites and pursuing a degree in Political Science. After realizing I was not excited about my current education, I started researching other careers. I decided I wanted something that involved working with people, allowed for continual growth, and had room for alternating areas of specialty. After researching nursing, I decided it fit and immediately enrolled in the prerequisite courses. Once I started taking courses like anatomy, chemistry, and physiology, I realized I really loved learning about these subjects and was excited for the future. I started the nursing program at Dixie State University in January of 2013 and loved every minute of it. Nursing has been challenging in ways I never would have guessed, but, despite the workload, it has never really seemed like work. The best part about nursing school was my time in clinical rotations, which was amazing, and only reaffirmed that nursing is the right career for me. I have developed a deep appreciation and love for the nursing field and know this is a meaningfull career that will keep me challenged and engaged. I recently hit my one year mark as a circulating nurse in the operating room at Dixie Regional Medical Center where I am currently specializing in neurosurgery. I also started gaining experience in SDS as a post-op nurse and plan to continuing my training in PACU and Endoscopy.
